A week in the life of the Interns

Intern Schedule

The interns will typically follow the schedule of the Supervisor (Chief Allen) which is 0700 – 1500. This can change depending on what is going on in the village and if there is Court going on. Ideally the week will be divided among the Cyber & Criminal Justice interns.

Interns are given some flexibility in when they take Lunch, Working from home, and what they do during the day.

Interns can expect to:

  • Go on ride alongs,

  • Assist on Calls,

  • Attend Court,

  • Patrol the village,

  • Work Closely with each other to work on not only the Internship Project, but on projects that improve the department.

The village has never had an intern specializing in Marketing / Social Media / PR. This intern will have different responsibilities / duties if accepted

Responsibilities

While the day to day responsibilities may change based on the current needs of the department all inters are expected to:

  • Conducting themselves respectfully in a way that reflects positively on the village

  • Assisting in investigations

  • Assisting community police functions

  • Generating Reports

  • Mapping Crime in the village

  • Keep all information confidential 

  • Identify an Internship project to accomplish 

While interns are given flexibility on shifts, lunch, and deliverables, they are expected to not abuse this flexibly

What you gain

Interns are able to gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and have an opportunity to develop a professional networking
base for the future positions in government service or law enforcement. ​

  • On-the-job training in various aspects of law enforcement, such as conducting investigations, assisting with community police functions, and generating reports.

  • The opportunity to develop a professional network in the field of government service or law enforcement.

  • Experience in working closely with other interns and department staff on projects that improve the department.

  • The ability to gain valuable work experience and skills that will be beneficial in future positions in law enforcement or other related fields.

  • The opportunity to gain a better understanding of the inner workings of a police department and the role it plays in the community.

Ready to Apply?

Internships will generally run for one semester, either spring, summer or fall. Application deadline for the Spring semester is April 15, for the Summer semester is November 15th and for the Fall semester is July 31st. Those wishing to apply may do so by completing the Village of Yorkville Police Department Internship Application and delivering it to the Chief of Police once it is complete 

  • The minimum qualifications for an internship with Yorkville Police Department are as follows:

  • Age 18 or above.

  • US citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university, in good standing.

  • Be able to work a minimum of eight hours a week.

  • Ability to pass a background investigation with no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
